The History of Lift-Sharing

Car-sharing emerged as a business concept in the early 70's and is still growing as a viable industry, predominantly in Europe and America. The global benefits of the idea have become more apparent since the early days - research into car emissions and their effects on the environment have prompted authorities all over the world to implement policies and employ new measures to cut the use of cars and other petrol-fuelled vehicles.

"Mitzfahrzentralen", the network of car sharing organisations in Germany, arranges over 1.5 million shared lifts each year. Other successful European schemes are "Autostop" in France, "Taxistop" in Belgium and "Sharcom" in Switzerland. In all other countries the idea is commonplace and there are usually offices in every city.
